Sony introduces AI graphics upscaling for standard PS5 models.
Sony is rolling out a new AI upscaling technology for the standard PS5, dubbed Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR). This innovation stems from Sony’s collaboration with AMD under Project Amethyst, as detailed in a recent blog post.
While PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on the PS5 Pro is touted as the benchmark for quality, early tests by Digital Foundry suggest that QSSR may not match PSSR’s speed due to the PS5 lacking dedicated machine learning hardware. Consequently, players can expect an upscaled resolution closer to 1440p on the standard PS5, rather than the upscaled 4K available on the Pro model.
Daniel Craig, a principal graphics R&D engineer at Sony, explained that on the PS5 Pro, developers typically target 4K output while adjusting the render resolution accordingly. In contrast, PS5 developers need to be more adaptable, fine-tuning not only the render resolution but also their overall presentation targets based on the chosen graphics mode.
However, Craig noted that QSSR can seamlessly replace titles that already utilize PSSR with just a few days of adjustments, increasing the likelihood that developers will implement it. Sony plans to make this technology widely available to all PlayStation developers.
The first games to leverage QSSR will be Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, both receiving patches today to introduce this feature as an additional graphics option on PS5. (Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition also launches today.) Early footage from Sony showcases the sharper graphics that QSSR brings to these titles.
Digital Foundry highlighted the significant potential of QSSR, stating that it could greatly enhance the visual quality of many games that have suffered from low resolution and subpar upscaling in this generation.
