Neon Genesis Evangelion to Launch in VR in 2027 with a New Alternate Universe Storyline

Korean developer Pixelity Inc. has unveiled a debut trailer for Evangelion: Δ Cross Reflections, offering a glimpse into a multi-part alternate-universe reimagining of the Neon Genesis Evangelion series designed for VR.

Initially announced in early 2025, this project stands out as one of the most ambitious VR games in development. It will consist of a trilogy that reinterprets the events of the original 1995 anime while introducing a fresh narrative rather than merely recreating the anime in a virtual space. Players will step into the shoes of a new NERV trainee aspiring to become an Evangelion pilot, engaging in epic battles against Angels and exploring iconic locations from the series, all within an alternative timeline that features both familiar and original characters.

The first trailer showcases a 2D-animated preview of scenes players can expect in the final game. One notable moment features a new character conversing with the player as damaged ships crash onto the street nearby. The trailer also hints at various activities, including navigating NERV HQ, repairing vehicles and Evangelions, training at shooting ranges, and even some quirky moments like hedgetrimming and enjoying cake with Rei Ayanami and Asuka Langley. While these snippets may seem disjointed, they suggest that the game will blend familiar elements with innovative experiences as it revisits the beloved universe.

The Evangelion franchise has a history of exploring alternative-universe narratives, with several PC and console games from the late 1990s doing just that, including dating sims. The Rebuild of Evangelion films also offer a different perspective on the original story. This isn’t the franchise’s first foray into VR either; a Japan-exclusive VR experience previously allowed players to pilot an Eva and battle Angels.

However, this new project is more ambitious, aiming to redefine the franchise following the conclusion of the Rebuild series and the departure of creator Hideaki Anno. The first installment of this trilogy is slated for release in 2027, with subsequent titles to follow. Alongside a planned anime TV series penned by Yoko Taro, this indicates a growing willingness to explore fresh interpretations of the iconic franchise, including ventures into virtual reality.
