Capcom to Integrate AI Technology into Game Development Process

A Capcom developer recently stirred up some conversation regarding the potential integration of AI into the RE Engine, the technology behind titles like Resident Evil Requiem, Pragmata, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword. While Capcom hasn’t fully adopted generative AI for in-game content creation yet, they have expressed a vision for a future where game development is a collaborative effort with AI.

These intriguing remarks came from programmer Satoshi Ishida during the Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026, an event dedicated to showcasing advancements in the RE Engine. According to reports, Ishida discussed the REX Project, aimed at evolving the RE Engine for the next generation of gaming.

While many of the proposed enhancements focus on aspects like data formatting and memory management rather than AI, Ishida did emphasize that “successfully integrating AI technology into development workflows has become an essential condition for streamlining future development,” and that “our goal is a future where we create games together with AI.”

For those wary of AI’s role in game development, these comments might raise some concerns. However, the type of AI Ishida is referring to is distinct from the generative AI typically used for creating art or other game assets. As of March 2026, Capcom had reassured investors that they do not intend to use generative AI for content creation in their games. Notably, Resident Evil Requiem was featured in the controversial reveal of Nvidia DLSS 5.

Currently, Capcom’s focus on AI appears to be more about improving workflows, so we shouldn’t anticipate the next Resident Evil title being entirely crafted with generative AI. Still, if you’re a fan of Capcom’s games and share concerns about generative AI’s growing presence in the industry, these recent statements might be a bit unsettling. The unique, hand-crafted quality of Capcom’s games is a significant part of their appeal.
