Sombra Transitions to Support Role in Overwatch, Remains a Formidable Force

One of the most significant hero reworks in Overwatch’s decade-long journey is on the horizon. With the arrival of season 5, Sombra, previously a damage hero, is transitioning to a support role in a bold move that has sparked some debate among the community. Many Sombra enthusiasts are not exactly thrilled about her new healing responsibilities.

Alec Dawson, the associate game director for Overwatch, assures that the essence of Sombra remains intact in this rework, and he believes players will start to appreciate her support role after they spend some time with her.

“It’s been quite a long road to rework Sombra in particular,” Dawson shared in an interview. “Initially, we didn’t set out to make her a support hero.”

The focus was instead on her “triangle of lethality”—her damage output, invisibility, and hacking skills—while preserving her unique personality and playstyle.

“Keeping the soul of Sombra intact was crucial,” Dawson emphasized. “There were earlier versions of her rework that still fell under the DPS category but didn’t quite hit the mark. We wanted to ensure she remained active and aggressive, not just a healer sitting in the backline.”

In her new support role, Sombra will still pose a threat when she emerges from her cloaked state to engage enemies.

“This is a big shift for players,” Dawson acknowledged. “It will take time for them to adjust. Their role on the team will change, and their expectations of teammates might shift as well. However, once they grasp her kit, they can play Sombra similarly to how they do now, and it will start to make sense.”

Dawson also pointed out Sombra’s new ability, Hot Fix, which allows her to heal teammates significantly over a 12-second duration without needing to constantly monitor them.

“For characters like Winston or Genji who are about to dive in, Hot Fix can be incredibly powerful,” he noted. “I think players will find Sombra enjoyable to play in well-coordinated teams.”

Sombra’s support rework is set to go live on October 6, alongside a rework for Roadhog. Season 5 will also introduce a new support hero, Doctrine, as part of the ongoing evolution of Overwatch.
