This innovative modular lever-action wallet easily attaches to my phone without tools.

This toolless modular lever-action wallet is the coolest accessory I’ve attached to my phone. Remember when I tried out the ultra-slim and handy OhSnap Snap Grip Stand and ended up buying one for myself? Now, OhSnap has introduced a magnetic lever-action card wallet that stacks perfectly with that stand. It’s hands down the most impressive wallet I’ve ever stuck to my phone.

With a simple pull of the integrated springy lever, your cards fan out for easy access. Need to adjust the thickness of your wallet? Just press in the right spot, and it comes apart without any tools, allowing you to swap in a 3, 5, or 7-card “core” that securely holds your cards in place.

Want to add an ID card, work badge, elastic band for extra cards, or a money clip? You can easily switch out the front or back magnetic plates for any of those options. Alternatively, you can replace both with ultra-thin aluminum covers if you prefer a wallet that doesn’t magnetically attach to your phone.

You can see it in action in my Today I’m Toying With video embedded in this post.

What I love most is how the entire kit snaps together using a compliant mechanism — the plastic arms of the card-carrying core function like springs, pushing a locking mechanism into the notches of each modular cover as you slide the parts together. Once your cards are inside, they keep the arms apart, preventing accidental openings (unless you drop the whole wallet). It’s a clever design.

Even when I did drop the wallet (thanks for the suggestion, hugo!), it didn’t fall apart completely. Typically, it just came apart a bit, though I did manage to create a small explosion when I dropped it hard on concrete once: one half popped off, and two cards flew out, but everything landed within a two-foot radius. The wallet has a noticeable dent now.

There are definitely some drawbacks. While OhSnap markets the Wallet 2 as “impossibly thin,” it’s only truly sleek in its thinnest 3-card variant, without the bulkier MagSafe and MagStack plates attached.

The main reason I’m holding off on purchasing one is the price and weight. The 7-card version makes my phone feel too heavy, adding 127 grams. While I enjoyed using the 3-card version as my wallet for a few weeks, it would cost me $61 on Kickstarter or $76 at retail to get that with a double-magnet kit. OhSnap is also charging more than I’d prefer ($35 for an ID cover or a money clip!) for additional accessories.

OhSnap didn’t win me over this time. However, I can definitely see gifting one to someone else.
