Startup Launches AI-Driven Acne Treatment Prescriptions
Residents of Utah can now leverage AI technology to obtain prescriptions for acne treatment. A healthcare startup has introduced an app that allows users to scan their faces, enabling the AI to assess the severity of acne and autonomously generate a prescription. This initiative is being rolled out as a pilot program with a phased approach to physician oversight. Initially, two physicians will review each AI-generated prescription for the first 100 patients, with oversight transitioning to a sample review of at least 10% of prescriptions monthly after reaching 500 patients. Additionally, any cases involving complications or side effects will be closely examined.
Other healthcare companies in Utah are also exploring AI-generated prescriptions, following the state’s earlier decision to permit AI systems to renew certain medications. However, this startup claims to be the first in the nation to provide initial prescriptions rather than just renewals. The pilot aims to support, not replace, healthcare professionals by managing routine, low-acuity cases, thereby allowing dermatologists to concentrate on more complex and high-risk patients.
The service will be available for $4.99 per month and is intended for Utah residents aged 18 and older with mild to moderate acne. If the AI system is unable to confidently determine a treatment, users will be referred to a physician. Currently, the AI can prescribe eight different skin treatments.
