Upcoming Transformers Film to Feature Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay

Paramount’s massive $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery is now finalized, and the new media giant is quickly shifting gears on the Transformers franchise. Recent reports indicate that Paramount Pictures has enlisted Steven Spielberg to oversee all creative elements for the next live-action Transformers film, signaling a revival for the series.

Whether you’re a fan or not, this could mean Michael Bay is set to return to the Transformers universe to steer the franchise back on course.

According to sources, Spielberg will take on the role of executive producer for the upcoming live-action Transformers movie and will guide its creative vision. Michael Bay, who helmed the first five live-action films, is reportedly in preliminary discussions to direct the eighth installment in the series. Longtime producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is also back on board alongside Spielberg.

The new Transformers film has a screenwriter attached: Jason Fuchs, known for his work on Wonder Woman and Argylle, as well as co-creating HBO’s It: Welcome to Derry. Bay is said to have been impressed with Fuchs’ script, which has encouraged him to return to the franchise after nearly a decade away.

Bay directed the original live-action Transformers, which debuted in 2007, along with four sequels: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Transformers: Age of Extinction, and Transformers: The Last Knight. These five films collectively raked in over $4.4 billion globally at the box office.

In the post-Bay landscape, Paramount released the prequel Bumblebee, which saw moderate success, followed by the less successful Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. The studio also attempted another prequel with the animated film Transformers One in 2024, which, despite receiving critical praise, did not perform well at the box office.

There were plans for a Transformers-G.I. Joe crossover hinted at in Rise of the Beasts, but that project has been shelved. Instead, Paramount is now focusing on a standalone G.I. Joe film directed by Danny McBride, featuring Bradley Cooper as the leader of the Joes.

Optimus Prime: Awakening has been announced for screenings celebrating the franchise’s 40th anniversary.
