Two mysterious PlayStation devices have surfaced, with one possibly being an OLED version of the PlayStation Portal.
Is Sony gearing up to unveil a new PlayStation Portal game streaming handheld? Recent certifications from the Wi-Fi Alliance for two unannounced PlayStation devices suggest that updates to the PlayStation Portal could be on the horizon, potentially including the rumored OLED screen we heard about earlier this year.
The two devices, categorized as “Gaming Console/Peripherals,” bear model numbers CFI-Y2000 and CFI-Y2105, indicating a clear upgrade from the current Portal’s CFI-Y1001 model number. According to the certification documents, these new models operate on Android 15, hinting that they might indeed be Portals, as the existing model also runs on Android (in contrast to the PS5, which uses a custom OS).
While there’s anticipation for a PlayStation handheld that can natively run PS5 games with next-gen AMD graphics, the PlayStation Portal focuses on streaming games either from your home console or via Sony’s cloud service. This approach allows for a more budget-friendly device, a point Sony highlighted back in June: “Cloud streaming also requires minimal memory, making it an increasingly attractive low-cost thin client device in the current market environment where memory prices are rising.”
However, it seems the new devices won’t feature significantly enhanced Wi-Fi capabilities for streaming. They are certified for 1×1 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, but not for 6GHz, and they appear to lack additional antennas.
Unfortunately, the certification documents don’t reveal much more information. They are available for review at the end of this article. PlayStation has not yet responded to requests for comment. However, hardware leaker KeplerL2 mentioned earlier this year that Sony was developing “another version” of the Portal for release this year, which would be an “OLED version.”
The original Portal, equipped with an 8-inch LCD screen, made its debut in late 2023.
