After 12 Years, the Cancelled Kojima Game P.T. Returns
Before Xbox secured the rights to Hideo Kojima’s upcoming horror project, the legendary game designer made waves with a playable teaser in 2014. Known as P.T., this brief yet impactful experience marked a significant moment in Kojima’s career following his tumultuous exit from Konami. Unfortunately, P.T. is no longer available to play, having been removed from the PlayStation Store in 2015.
Since its removal, fans have either recreated the experience or developed new titles inspired by P.T. However, accessing the original game in its entirety is a challenge unless you’re willing to shell out a hefty sum on eBay for a console that still has it installed. Fortunately, thanks to recent developments in the PlayStation homebrew community, the original P.T. is now playable on PC.
“I made this on my own, in my spare time, because P.T. deserved to keep existing somewhere other than on consoles that still have it installed,” explains port creator Lorean Xavier on GitHub.
This PC version retains every texture, model, and sound from the original game, but Lorean Xavier notes that players will need to own a copy of the game to get it running. Alternatively, a jailbroken PlayStation 4 can access online-hosted versions provided by preservationists.
While this adds a layer of complexity to playing P.T. in 2026, the new features might make it worthwhile. The updated version supports higher resolutions, mouse and keyboard controls, AMD upscaling, and can exceed 30 frames per second. These enhancements are appealing, but they may not fully capture the essence of what made P.T. so memorable.
For those who missed it, the game began as an enigma. Players had to navigate P.T.’s lifelike corridors in specific ways to uncover clues that ultimately revealed it was a teaser for a (still unrealized) Silent Hills game. It was a perfect blend of mystery, timing—especially with Metal Gear Solid 5 on the horizon—and innovation. Since then, Kojima has continued to evolve his approach to movement as a core gameplay element in titles like Death Stranding.
Details about his current project, OD, remain scarce, but it’s being developed in collaboration with horror director Jordan Peele. Fans are already drawing comparisons between the hyperrealistic Xbox game and P.T. As Kojima teases OD to be a groundbreaking experience, those similarities are likely to linger in the minds of players.
It seems Hideo Kojima has been honing his skills in the art of stealth.
