All the Latest Details on Final Fantasy 14: Evercold

We’re just under a month away from the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest in Tokyo, where we expect to receive some of the last major details about Evercold before its January 2027 launch. Even now, there’s plenty to unpack about this expansion, which is shaping up to be the most significant update since Creative Studio III transformed the game with A Realm Reborn 13 years ago. Here’s what we know so far.

Evercold will introduce two new job classes, and we’ve already caught a glimpse of the first one—bastion. This tank class wields a unique weapon called the skyltborg. What’s that, you ask? Picture a gunblade, but now it’s a gunshield… that also has a blade. In the class overview trailer, we see the skyltborg used for defense with massive shields, ranged attacks using bursts of aether fire, and melee combat to slice through enemies. It’s a wild blend of melee DPS, ranged DPS, and tanking that somehow comes together seamlessly. While the second class hasn’t been officially revealed, it’s confirmed to feature ranged physical damage, and fan theories suggest it might involve a crossbow, with some compelling breakdowns supporting that idea.

One of the standout features of Final Fantasy XIV has always been the deep customization options for player avatars. With Evercold, players can expect a treasure trove of new customization features, including the ability to modify Au Ra horns, nose shading, face paint, and custom color selections for eyes, hair, and skin tones. Additionally, players will gain new animation options, allowing for unique appearances during teleport spells and other class-specific actions.

Evercold is embracing the theme of customization by allowing players to choose their path in the main story quest for the first time. Unlike previous expansions that followed a linear progression, Evercold will let players decide the order in which they tackle the story, with NPC conversations reflecting their choices. For instance, after completing area A, players can choose to visit areas B, C, or D in any order. To ensure a smooth experience regardless of the chosen path, each area will automatically adjust its content to match player levels.

A common complaint among players has been that many classes feel too similar, with tank, melee DPS, ranged DPS, and healer abilities often feeling like mere variations of the same basic actions. It seems the developers have taken this feedback to heart, introducing a new “evolved” combat system in Evercold aimed at restoring individuality to job classes. This system streamlines abilities, making it easier for new players by reducing the number of buttons and rotations they need to learn. While not every class has had its “evolved” form revealed yet, there are some insights available on how the new abilities and combos will function. For those who prefer the traditional approach, FFXIV will still offer a “reborn” mode to maintain the old mechanics.

Evercold will also revamp how players manage their time to alleviate the grind associated with leveling multiple job classes at the cap. Currently, players must complete daily quests to earn currency for higher-level gear, but this will shift to a weekly system where players can choose quests to complete at their own pace, earning activity points to spend on gear upgrades.

Another time-consuming aspect is acquiring high-level gear for multiple classes. It can be a hassle when each job requires its own set of gear. Evercold aims to ease this burden by allowing players to “reflect” their highest item level gear to other max-level job classes. While this won’t apply to further gear enhancements like materia, it should simplify the process of leveling up secondary and tertiary job classes.

Your chocobo companion has always been your loyal steed, but there’s been one major limitation—you can’t take them into dungeons. Evercold will change that by updating the companion system to allow chocobos to join you as combat party members. This means if you’re tired of waiting in the duty finder queue, you can tackle a dungeon with just one other player and your two chocobos filling the last two slots.
