Minecraft’s Switch 2 Upgrade Available for Free to Digital Owners Only

Minecraft enthusiasts have something to look forward to this October with the arrival of the Switch 2 upgrade. Microsoft has sold millions of copies of Minecraft on the original Switch, and while some players will enjoy free access to the new version, many others will need to purchase it separately.

Since its full launch in 2011, Mojang’s sandbox survival game has captured the hearts of gamers. It made its debut on the original Switch in 2017, quickly becoming a bestseller on the platform. Now, after more than nine years, Minecraft is set to receive an upgrade for the Nintendo Switch 2. This new version boasts enhanced visuals and allows players to transfer their save data from the original Switch. However, only those who own a digital copy of Minecraft will be eligible for the free upgrade; physical cartridge owners will need to buy the new edition.

The price for Minecraft on the Nintendo Switch 2 is set at $29.99, matching the cost of the original Switch version. This decision has sparked frustration among physical copy owners, as they will have to pay full price for the upgrade if they want to access the new features.

Nintendo may be trying to close a loophole that previously allowed players to exploit free upgrades. For instance, with The Witcher 3, players could receive a free digital remaster by inserting the cartridge into the console, which led to the game being duplicated across multiple accounts. This move could be a strategy to prevent similar situations from occurring.

As of now, it remains uncertain if Nintendo will provide any solutions or compensation for those who own the physical edition. Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on October 27. Digital owners of Minecraft on Switch have until January 31, 2027, to claim their free upgrade.

During Minecraft Live, it was announced that a new dimension from Minecraft Dungeons 2 will be introduced to Minecraft in 2027.
