Marvel’s Wolverine Sales Highlight Strong Demand for Physical Discs

When Sony revealed plans to cease production of physical discs for its upcoming games starting in 2028, it stirred up a storm of discontent among gamers. Fans of physical media took to social media, expressing their frustration and disappointment. While some argue that this shift aligns with the increasing prevalence of digital gaming, recent sales data for the PlayStation tells a different story.

According to analysis from Ampere Analysis, a significant portion of sales for the PlayStation 5’s latest exclusive, Marvel’s Wolverine, came from physical copies. Out of 2.16 million units sold, 35% were boxed versions, translating to approximately 756,000 physical sales. In Europe, the trend was even more pronounced, with 51% of sales attributed to the boxed edition.

Marvel’s Wolverine wasn’t alone in achieving notable physical sales figures. About 45.4% of Silent Hill: Townfall sales were for physical copies on PlayStation. Other titles like The Blood of the Dawnwalker and Onimusha: Way of the Sword also saw impressive numbers, with 36% and 31% of their sales being physical, respectively. While digital purchases dominate in the U.S., the global landscape shows a more balanced distribution.

The anger directed at Sony stems from concerns that the company’s decision to phase out physical disc production undermines the future of game ownership. Currently, players don’t truly “own” the digital games they buy from platforms like the PlayStation Store; they merely hold a license to access them. This distinction is crucial, as it means digital storefronts are not obligated to maintain access to purchased games. Recently, Sony removed hundreds of movies from the PlayStation Store after a contract expired, leaving buyers without access to content they had paid for. The company is also attempting to assert in court that players do not own their digital games.

The backlash against Sony’s announcement has been palpable, with trailers, social media posts, and official communications inundated with critical comments. With Marvel’s Wolverine, it appears that fans are backing their words with their wallets.

Angry fans excel at voicing their discontent, and their reactions are anything but pleasant.
