John Cena Shares Insights on Peacemaker’s Future

Given the somewhat grim outlook at the beginning of Peacemaker season 2, with Chris Smith, aka Peacemaker (John Cena), questioning his role among his friends, the relatively upbeat finale felt a bit off. Then, with Rick Flag Sr. abducting Chris and tossing him onto an alien prison planet designed for metahumans, fans were left hanging on a significant cliffhanger. Now that’s more like it.

It’s been almost a year since we last caught up with Chris and the crew, and fans are still eager to know what’s next. While the showrunner and DC Studios co-CEO has been somewhat vague, Cena recently shared some insights about Peacemaker season 3.

In a chat with an interviewer, Cena was asked if he had donned Peacemaker’s uniquely toilet-shaped steel helmet since the end of season 2.

“No,” Cena replied. “And when I put that helmet on, I told James, ‘Dude, I will put this helmet on as long as you need me to.’ I love working with him.”

This revelation from Cena shouldn’t come as a shock to fans. Beyond Gunn hinting that Peacemaker might show up in an upcoming DCU film, he confirmed shortly after the season 2 finale on a podcast that the finale could be “the final episode of Peacemaker.”

Gunn emphasized on the podcast that he genuinely believes in the show and its characters, stating that “Peacemaker will be back,” though not necessarily in a TV format.

“We have plans, but you’ll see all these characters in the future of the DCU, and not too long,” Gunn mentioned.

As much as fans might crave more seasons of Peacemaker, it makes sense that a new season focusing solely on Chris and the crew might not be in the cards. As Cena noted, Gunn has a wealth of new characters to explore now that he’s at the helm of the DCU.

“Because you get the whole box of toys, you have to address the really valuable ones first, and I understand that,” Cena explained. “[…] I got to step back. Let Superman and Batman get their due.”

It’s an understatement to say Gunn has a lot on his plate right now. Superman has been a massive success, while Supergirl faced critical backlash, putting pressure on Gunn’s control over the DC universe. This has sparked discussions among fans—both supportive and critical—about whether he’s the right fit for the role.

With Superman: Man of Tomorrow on the horizon, Gunn is under significant pressure. He’ll need to focus on major blockbuster successes to steer the ship back on course before he can even think about a Peacemaker season 3.

‘If there’s a future for us, I assume that’s where it’ll be.’
