High-Value Magic: The Gathering Decks Set for Reprints

A highly sought-after collection of pre-constructed Magic: The Gathering decks is set to become more accessible. Wizards of the Coast has announced that the Warhammer 40K Commander Decks will receive a “small reprint,” making them available to distributors and retailers soon.

Originally launched in 2022, these four decks were the inaugural entries in the Universes Beyond series, introducing numerous cards that had never seen a reprint before. Priced at $59.99 at launch, each deck now commands hundreds of dollars on the secondary market. On TCGPlayer, bundles containing unopened versions of all four decks have recently sold for a median price of around $1,000.

Each deck represents a different faction from the Warhammer 40K universe. The Forces of the Imperium is an Esper (white-blue-black) deck that focuses on Imperial Inquisitors and utilizes the Investigate mechanic, allowing players to create Clue tokens that can be sacrificed for card draws. The Necron Dynasties deck is mono-black and centers on artifact creatures, often being the priciest Warhammer precon available.

The Tyranid Swarm deck is a Temur (blue-red-green) build designed for wide board presence, while The Ruinous Powers is a Grixis (blue-black-red) deck themed around the Forces of Chaos. Its Commander, Abaddon the Despoiler, boasts a powerful Cascade ability that enables players to chain multiple spells together. Each deck contains 100 cards, with 42 specifically created for this release.

While the Warhammer 40K Commander Decks were well-received upon their initial release, the Universes Beyond brand has sparked mixed reactions. Some players are frustrated by the influx of various IPs, which has led to traditional Magic elements like dragons and elves clashing with characters from franchises like SpongeBob SquarePants and Spider-Man. Conversely, others appreciate the opportunity to summon iconic figures such as Cloud Strife and Gandalf. These crossovers have contributed to an increase in the number of Magic sets released annually, making it challenging to keep pace with the deluge of new cards. As a result, staying competitive in some of the game’s top formats has never been more costly.

Significant changes are also on the horizon for Booster Packs and Collector Packs.
