Paramount is Developing a Live-Action Cyberpunk 2077 Film
Cyberpunk 2077 is set to make its cinematic debut with a live-action film in development at Paramount.
Reports surfaced on October 8 that a movie adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077 is underway, with Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura attached to the project. CD Projekt Red, the studio behind both The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077, is also on board to help produce this early-stage film.
Details regarding the plot, casting, writers, or directors have yet to be revealed.
CD Projekt Red’s joint CEO Michał Nowakowski expressed enthusiasm about partnering with Paramount, stating on Twitter, “We’re excited about Paramount as a future partner who shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise. We look forward to sharing more details at the appropriate time.”
Cyberpunk 2077 has been a significant success for CD Projekt Red. After a rocky launch in 2020, the first-person sci-fi open-world RPG has seen numerous free updates and a major paid DLC, Phantom Liberty, released in 2023. The game, featuring Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand, has sold over 40 million copies globally, and a sequel is already in the works.
This film adaptation adds to the growing trend of video game movies in Hollywood. In recent years, titles like Fallout and The Last of Us have become major hits for streaming platforms, while films such as Sonic, Minecraft, Super Mario, and the latest Resident Evil have shattered the stereotype of video game adaptations being unsuccessful. Hollywood is now eager to transform every major game into a film, with projects like Arc Raiders also in the pipeline.
For Paramount, this announcement follows its recent merger with Warner Bros. to form Skydance, a new company led by David Ellison. Bobby Kotick, the former CEO of Activision, has been appointed to the board of this newly formed entity.
