The Retro Song Bird: Your Favorite Game Boy Tunes, Now in One Device

The Retro Song Bird might resemble devices like the GB Operator with its top slot for Game Boy cartridges, but it’s not meant for gaming. Instead, this unassuming box serves as a media player that lets you enjoy the music and sound effects from Game Boy cartridges, featuring simple controls for skipping tracks and adjusting the volume of its built-in speaker. Think of it as a modern twist on the classic Sony Walkman, swapping out cassette tapes for those nostalgic game cartridges you’ve held onto.

Crafted by a skilled creator known as BJ, the Retro Song Bird offers more than just basic playback. The built-in speaker delivers sound reminiscent of the original Game Boy, but it also includes a stereo line-out for connecting to higher-quality speakers or for recording and sampling. Each of the Game Boy’s four sound channels can be accessed as separate USB audio streams, and the device allows for backing up ROMs and save data, as well as exporting music files as WAVs to a PC.

So far, only a handful of prototypes of the Retro Song Bird have been made, and they aren’t available for purchase. However, BJ is considering crowdfunding or selling the music player directly once the hardware and design are finalized.
