Magic announces four new Marvel-themed Commander decks set for release early next year.

Magic: The Gathering fans have voiced concerns that Universes Beyond sets stray too far from the game’s fantasy roots and original narratives. However, a recent announcement at New York Comic Con introduced an exciting solution: a set inspired by an original story within the Marvel Universe, crafted specifically to align with Magic’s mechanics and atmosphere.

Titled Darkhold Destiny, this dimension-hopping adventure centers around a cursed book and the supervillains who seek to harness its power. Set to launch in April 2027, the release will feature new scene boxes, unique booster treatments, and a tie-in comic penned by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly. Additionally, four Commander decks will highlight some of Marvel’s most iconic magical characters. Here’s what we know about these preconstructed decks so far.

If you felt a lack of wizarding action in 2026 with Secrets of Strixhaven and Reality Fracture’s focus on Hexhaven, Strange Academy is here to fill that void. Based on the 2020 comic series by Skottie Young and Humberto Ramos, this deck showcases Doctor Strange and Doctor Voodoo as they establish a school for young spellcasters in Louisiana. While Magic has only previously depicted Stephen Strange as a medical doctor, he will take on a commanding role in this Esper (white-blue-black) deck. Strategically, the deck emphasizes blinking creatures, casting spells on them, and reusing spells for maximum impact.

Thor takes the lead in the Naya (red-green-white) deck, showcasing his strength by aiming to amplify his power. This deck is packed with gods and warriors, focusing on engaging in combat every turn. It’s designed to be straightforward, making it an ideal choice for players who enjoy making a big impression at the table.

In the Orzhov (white-black) deck, Blade leads a team of Marvel’s edgiest heroes, including Moon Knight and Ghost Rider, as they battle the vampires of the Marvel Universe. The gameplay revolves around the ebb and flow of life, with vampires draining opponents while Blade grows stronger based on the life you’ve gained.

For those who relish the role of the archenemy, the Rakdos (black-red) deck features Hela and Dormammu, along with a host of Marvel’s demon lords, devils, avatars, and horrors. Players will amass armies of zombies and Mindless Ones to launch attacks, while also having the option to sacrifice their minions for card draw and ping effects.

Recent leaks suggest that a Magic: The Gathering Spider-Man Commander deck is on the horizon, adding even more excitement to this upcoming set.
