Squadron 42 Unveils Impressive Cast in Latest Reveal
Cloud Imperium Games has unveiled a new trailer for Squadron 42, the long-awaited single-player offshoot of Star Citizen that has been in the works for over a decade. The latest footage provides a solid indication that this title is indeed on track, and players can now add it to their Steam wishlists ahead of its anticipated release in Q2 2027.
The trailer showcases a blend of cinematic cutscenes featuring the voices and likenesses of several renowned actors, along with gameplay snippets that highlight both ground-based first-person shooting and thrilling space combat. A press release outlines the story’s premise, set within the expansive Star Citizen universe.
In the year 2945, the United Empire of Earth teeters on the brink of collapse, facing threats from outlaws and hostile alien forces lurking in the depths of space. Players step into the shoes of a rookie in the UEE Navy, embarking on a perilous journey that will elevate them from a fresh recruit to a key player in a galactic conflict. Stationed aboard a colossal capital ship, they will interact with a dynamic crew, build relationships, and confront the sacrifices and split-second decisions that will define their journey as they earn their rank and legacy.
The trailer hints that Squadron 42 will be heavily narrative-driven, bolstered by a star-studded cast that includes Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, Gillian Anderson, Mark Strong, Liam Cunningham, Andy Serkis, Henry Cavill, Ben Mendelsohn, John Rhys-Davies, and many other familiar faces. The somewhat patriotic tone of the trailer gives it a vibe reminiscent of Starship Troopers, albeit without the satire, though this could be a clever misdirection. Regarding gameplay, the press release describes the experience as follows:
Players will navigate through space battles, stealthily infiltrate enemy-held territories, and make critical decisions alongside their crew members, immersing themselves in the story through a mix of action, exploration, and interactive cinematic sequences. This combination aims to deliver the grandeur of a space epic while emphasizing the personal stakes of those fighting to survive.
Star Citizen, a multiplayer space trading and flight-action MMO spearheaded by Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts, was announced back in 2012. Since then, it has become one of the most funded crowdsourced entertainment projects ever, amassing over a billion dollars. However, more than a decade later, the game remains unfinished. An early access version was made available in 2017 for backers, but as of 2026, players continue to voice concerns over game-breaking bugs, repetitive missions, and various other issues.
The monetization strategies of Star Citizen have also faced criticism, particularly regarding in-game ships priced in the hundreds to thousands of real-world dollars. With any luck, the more focused scope of Squadron 42 will lead to a more polished and well-received experience compared to its MMO counterpart.
