Hacker Breaches 250,000-User Discord for Terraria’s Calamity Mod, Exploits It for Crypto Scam

If you haven’t been following the drama surrounding the immensely popular Terraria mod, Calamity, it’s been quite a ride over the last few years. To say it’s become infamous would be an understatement. This decade-old mod has faced serious allegations, including claims of “endangering minors,” ongoing disputes about unpaid wages amounting to “several thousand” dollars for its developers, and now, a cryptocurrency scam.

Before October 9, 2026, Calamity’s Discord server had a staggering membership of over 250,000 users. That’s a significant number for a mod that has been largely dormant, which likely attracted the attention of a notorious Discord hacker known as “Kata.”

After the developers announced in August that they were halting all work on the mod due to the second wave of child endangerment allegations, Calamity remained unfinished. This left the community hopeful when an initial server-wide ping on October 9 hinted at a potential return, only to lead to the crypto scam.

Just an hour later, moderators on the r/CalamityMod subreddit issued an urgent warning, advising users to leave the compromised Discord server immediately: “If you are in the discord server, LEAVE THE DISCORD SERVER. If you are still in the discord server, DO NOT ENGAGE IN THEIR CRYPTO.”

During that brief window, the Calamity Discord server was flooded with links to a cryptocurrency named after the server, which was predictably pumped and dumped once the community caught wind of the scam.

According to a post on the subreddit, later confirmed by the previous server owner, the Discord server was breached after the owner was deceived into granting access to two users posing as former moderators. Once the scam was revealed, one of the impostors identified themselves as Kata, a hacker known for targeting numerous popular Discord servers over the past two years.

The Calamity server has since been purged by a former moderator, who shared that they managed to “nuke” the server’s contents because the hackers had overlooked their admin privileges. While all channels and messages were successfully deleted, Kata and another user—likely either an alternate account or an associate—are still trying to keep the scam alive.

The only channel left, titled “#announce,” contains messages from one of the hackers claiming that “no crypto slop will be posted” anymore and that “some wrong people got permissions.” Fortunately, the Calamity community seems to be catching on, as tens of thousands of users have already exited the server in the last couple of days.
