Filming for the live-action series of Dungeon Crawler Carl kicks off in 2027.
The live-action adaptation of *Dungeon Crawler Carl* is inching closer to production, with filming for the anticipated TV series set to kick off in 2027.
This series, inspired by Matt Dinniman’s popular LitRPG novels, is currently in the early development phase at Universal Television, with preparations already in motion. During a panel at New York Comic Con, Kelsey Balance, the head of scripted series at Universal Global Television, shared that the team is in the process of hiring essential production staff and crafting scripts ahead of the shoot.
“We’re on track for that and then we’ll start shooting it, which is exciting,” Balance mentioned.
Fans can expect to hear more about the adaptation “very soon, within the next few weeks,” as the team finalizes additional details. However, a premiere date has yet to be revealed.
*Dungeon Crawler Carl* follows Coast Guard veteran Carl and Princess Donut, the prize-winning cat of his ex-girlfriend, as they navigate a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by an alien invasion. The remaining humans must traverse a perilous dungeon filled with monsters, aliens, and other dangers while competing in a twisted intergalactic reality show. As the series’ logline suggests, the apocalypse will be televised, and survival is just one part of the ordeal.
Chris Yost and Eric Heisserer will lead the series as executive producers, alongside Seth MacFarlane, Erica Huggins, and Rachel Hargreaves-Heald from MacFarlane’s production company, Fuzzy Door. Dinniman will also take on the role of co-executive producer.
The books have garnered a loyal fanbase thanks to their unique mix of fantasy, sci-fi, dark humor, and video game-inspired elements. The TV adaptation aims to introduce this blend to a broader audience, though it remains to be seen how closely it will adhere to the source material.
Casting information is still under wraps. Dinniman confirmed during the NYCC panel that Jeff Hays, who narrates the *Dungeon Crawler Carl* audiobooks, will lend his voice to Princess Donut in the series.
As for Carl, he has yet to be cast, and no premiere date has been set. Dinniman expressed his desire for an actor who can embody both Carl’s goofy charm and his more formidable moments.
