Dragon Quest’s Yuji Horii Praises AI for Revolutionizing Game Development Without Coding or Drawing
Yuji Horii, renowned for his contributions to the Dragon Quest RPG series, also made waves in Japan with his creation of the murder mystery adventure, The Portopia Serial Murder Case. Released in 1983 for PC, this title is credited with influencing Nintendo’s Famicom Detective Club series. However, outside Japan, Portopia is primarily recognized for Square Enix’s controversial 2023 AI-driven remake. Not one to shy away from innovation, Horii has embarked on crafting his own spiritual successor using AI technology.
His new project, Komiya in the Interrogation Room, is a brief browser-based game set entirely within the interrogation of a 72-year-old suspect named Komiya, who is being questioned about a potential safe robbery. Players must navigate through various questioning strategies to peel back the layers of deception, all while managing Agitation and Resistance meters that can hinder progress if they max out at 100.
In a recent social media post, Horii shared that he spent only about 30 minutes creating the game using Anthropic’s AI tools, highlighting the advantages of this technology in game development. He reminisced about the time he developed The Portopia Serial Murder Case, where he had to handle everything from story creation to coding on his own. “Now, with AI, even if you can’t draw or program, you can create a game by simply directing the AI. It’s astonishing,” he noted.
Horii has been vocal about his enthusiasm for AI in recent months, frequently posting about its potential, including the notion that it “hardly ever” fabricates information anymore. This enthusiasm coincides with the Dragon Quest series being involved in various generative AI promotional activities in collaboration with Google’s Gemini.
Currently, Horii is focused on developing the scenario for the upcoming Dragon Quest XII, which has undergone significant changes in the past year. Meanwhile, his iconic Portopia Serial Murder Case is set to receive a remake driven by developers and artists from G-Mode next year.
