First Poster Revealed for Greta Gerwig’s Upcoming Narnia Film on Netflix, Trailer Coming Soon
Greta Gerwig, known for her work on Barbie and Little Women, is set to bring C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia to life for Netflix, with a release planned for 2027 both on streaming and in IMAX theaters. Recently, Netflix unveiled a captivating poster for Gerwig’s adaptation, Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. Fans of fantasy can look forward to a sneak peek of the film on Tuesday, as the first trailer is expected to drop.
This latest reveal follows earlier glimpses of Aslan, the iconic talking lion voiced by Meryl Streep, and Daniel Craig’s character, Andrew Ketterley, the magician central to the story.
Originally slated for a 2026 release, Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew was pushed back by Netflix in May. The film is now set to hit IMAX and theaters worldwide on February 12, 2027, with early IMAX screenings starting on February 10, 2027. It will be available for streaming on Netflix beginning April 2, 2027.
The Magician’s Nephew is the sixth book in Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia series, published in 1955. This prequel explores the origins of Narnia, detailing how Aslan brought the magical realm into existence, set a millennium before the events of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Lewis’ most famous work.
Gerwig expressed her excitement about the project, stating, “I was a child when I first read The Magician’s Nephew, and I fell in love with the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life. I didn’t know that I would grow up to make films, but a universe built out of music is an idea that always lived in my heart. It is the honor of a lifetime to be asked to imagine it into being. Because of C. S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia, I believed in magic and hidden worlds and adventure. I believed that anywhere could be enchanted and that anyone could be swept up into an epic. That wonder and awe was available to everyone, even ordinary people like me… It transformed me.”
Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will mark the first live-action adaptation of this particular book. Previous adaptations of the series have included various versions of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, such as an ITV serial in 1967, an animated film in 1979, a BBC series in 1988, and a live-action film released by Disney and 20th Century in 2005. The BBC and Walden Media also adapted the subsequent novels, Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The Magician’s Nephew has seen adaptations for theater, radio, and even manga. Netflix secured the rights to C.S. Lewis’ works in 2018.
The film features a talented cast, including Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Daniel Craig, and Meryl Streep, along with newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell. Gerwig is both directing and writing the film.
