Assassin’s Creed Black Flag’s New Epilogue Hints at a Prequel to Assassin’s Creed 3

A dataminer has reportedly discovered a scrapped, unfinished cutscene hidden within Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, featuring a character named Miko, which strongly suggests it could have been a teaser for a prequel to Assassin’s Creed III.

Currently, you can’t check out the video yourself, as it seems a copyright strike has been issued against it. The cutscene, found by Sliderv2, shows Edward Kenway entering a bar and chatting with Miko, who co-founded the British Brotherhood of Assassins, prominently featured in Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate. Miko mentions he “put out a call to the wider Brotherhood,” leading to a cut to Adéwalé.

While Adéwalé’s appearance might hint at a connection to Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry, which was part of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag’s season pass back in 2013, users on the r/GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit noted an intriguing inconsistency in the dialogue of the unused cutscene. Interestingly, this thread was “removed by Reddit’s filters” around the same time Sliderv2’s video faced a takedown.

The cutscene kicks off with Miko telling Edward, “The king is dead.” Since Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced concludes in 1722 and Freedom Cry starts in 1735—the same year Edward dies—the “King” Miko refers to must be George I of Great Britain, who passed away in 1727.

As for why this might hint at a potential Assassin’s Creed III prequel, it’s straightforward: Haytham Kenway, the antagonist of Assassin’s Creed III and Edward’s son, was born in 1725.

Coincidentally, the only insights we have about Edward’s life during the 1725 to 1735 timeframe come from the book Assassin’s Creed: Forsaken, which serves as an in-universe diary of Haytham’s life, and it barely touches on the decade between Haytham’s birth and Edward’s death. This leaves a narrative gap in the Assassin’s Creed canon. Additionally, there’s a compelling connection: Haytham personally assassinates Miko during the prologue of Assassin’s Creed III.

While all these pieces fit together nicely, it’s clear Ubisoft had a reason for cutting this scene. It appears this cutscene wasn’t part of the original 2013 release of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, indicating it was created specifically for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, only to be ultimately scrapped.

This raises questions about Ubisoft’s plans—perhaps they’ve shifted direction entirely, or maybe this placeholder cutscene was intended as a teaser for a future Assassin’s Creed project. It’s possible this scene was developed early on, especially since Edward’s voice actor, Matt Ryan, returned to record dialogue for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. This is just speculation, but there’s a chance we might see the completed cutscene in a Resynced version of Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry down the line.
