Antonio Banderas to Star as Hernán Cortés in AI-Driven Film

Antonio Banderas has been announced as the lead in an upcoming film centered on Hernán Cortés, the Spanish conquistador from the early 16th century. The project, titled *Cortés*, is set to incorporate significant elements of artificial intelligence, thanks to the collaboration with Utopai Studios and Ex Machina Studios.

Hernán Cortés is known for his conquest of Tenochtitlan, which led to the fall of the Aztec Empire in 1521. Banderas will portray this historical figure in what promises to be a high-budget production. The film is directed by Paul Mignot, known for *Victory or Death*, with the screenplay penned by Nicholas Kazan, recognized for *Reversal of Fortune*. Marco Weber, the owner of the AI film company, is producing the movie. Filming has commenced in Paris, with additional scenes planned in Spain, the birthplace of both Cortés and Banderas.

Set in 1519, *Cortés* begins in Cuba, where a restless soldier, eager for glory, takes command of an unauthorized expedition to the Yucatán. Upon reaching the coast of present-day Mexico, he encounters Marina, an enslaved Indigenous woman and skilled linguist who becomes crucial to his journey. As Cortés manipulates fragile alliances, faith, and fear to achieve conquest, Marina observes his transformation from a daring outlaw to a self-proclaimed messiah.

While fans are thrilled to see a Spanish actor embody a Spanish conquistador, there are some concerns regarding the age gap. Hernán Cortés was 36 years old in 1521, while Antonio Banderas is currently 66. However, given the advancements in film technology and Banderas’s enduring charisma, it’s likely that the production will find ways to address this age difference, especially with the anticipated use of AI.

Ex Machina Studios and Utopai Studios, both pioneers in AI filmmaking, will handle the production, sales, and global distribution of *Cortés*. The extent of AI’s role in the film remains to be seen, but reports suggest that the project was previously deemed unfilmable due to its ambitious scale, indicating that fans can expect innovative technology to play a significant part in its realization.
