All the Announcements from Apple’s ‘Welcome Home’ Event

Apple showcased a lineup of innovative smart home devices at its “Welcome Home” event, including its highly anticipated smart home hub. This flagship reveal was accompanied by updates to the HomePod Mini and Apple TV 4K, along with a variety of new smart home and security accessories developed in partnership with trusted third-party manufacturers.

The HomeView is Apple’s inaugural smart display, marking a significant addition to its smart home ecosystem since the launch of HomeKit in 2014. This device provides a dedicated interface for managing compatible smart home gadgets and security systems, similar to offerings from other major players in the market. Priced at $299, the HomeView comes in four colors: silver, starlight, rose pink, and space gray. It features a 7-inch Liquid Retina display mounted on a rounded speaker base, with the option for wall mounting, echoing the design of the iconic 2002 iMac G4. The display can adjust its brightness to blend seamlessly into its environment, dimming to just 0.3 nits for comfortable nighttime use. A 12-megapixel camera supports FaceTime calls and can recognize up to six users, allowing it to switch from a shared interface to a personalized experience.

In terms of functionality, the HomeView offers standard smart home hub features, enabling users to control lighting, thermostats, and monitor live feeds from up to nine security cameras. It also incorporates Apple Intelligence-powered Siri features, which require an iPhone connection for full functionality. Notably, every user in a household must have an iPhone with the latest OS, which could pose challenges for mixed-device households. Preorders are available now, with shipping starting on November 13th.

The HomePod Mini has received a refresh, with the new HomePod Mini 2 priced at $149. This updated version retains many design elements of its predecessor while introducing more muted color options: pink, blue, green, white, and midnight, all matching the current iMac lineup. The top panel features a revamped lighting swirl that syncs with album art and soundscapes. Powered by the S10 chip from the Apple Watch Series 10, it supports WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 6, and both Thread and Matter protocols. Siri integration via a connected iPhone will be added in a future software update.

The HomePod Mini 2 can serve as the default speaker for a Mac and can be paired with other HomePod devices for a surround sound setup. It also automatically calibrates with the new Apple TV 4K to optimize audio based on room positioning. Preorders are open now, with shipping beginning on October 30th.

The new Apple TV 4K, now in its fourth generation, features built-in microphones for hands-free Siri control, eliminating the need to use the remote for voice commands. Priced at $299, it offers minor but useful upgrades over its 2022 predecessor. While it doesn’t respond audibly, it displays answers on-screen. Users can pair it with an iPhone for enhanced Siri features, including personalized recommendations based on text conversations. If the remote is misplaced, Siri can help locate it using Bluetooth. Preorders are available today, with shipping expected on November 13th.

Additionally, Apple introduced the Home Collection, a range of smart home devices created in collaboration with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric. This collection includes various cameras, such as a $199 indoor camera that tilts down for privacy, a $299 outdoor security camera with optional floodlights, and a $249 video doorbell. All devices support HomeKit Secure Video, enabling them to recognize people, pets, and packages while utilizing Apple Intelligence features through a connected iPhone.

The collection also features an LG door lock and two thermostats, designed for easy setup via NFC, similar to pairing AirPods. Apple has not yet announced a release date for these smart home gadgets, only stating that they are “coming soon.”
