Sony unveils stunning new design for PlayStation 5
The PlayStation 5 and its accessories have seen their fair share of limited editions. This year alone, there was a Wolverine-themed console, along with Marathon-themed and Grand Theft Auto 6-themed DualSense controllers. However, for gamers who prefer a more understated look, Sony has just the thing. But there’s a catch.
The Japanese PlayStation Blog has unveiled the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black, set to launch on November 19, coinciding with the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, priced at ¥55,000. As the name implies, this edition features a sleek matte-black finish on both the console and the included DualSense controller. Unfortunately, this model is exclusive to Japan.
Last year, Sony introduced a Japanese-language-only version of the PlayStation 5, also exclusive to Japan, priced at ¥55,000. This special edition aims to provide a more affordable option compared to the U.S. market, where fluctuating import tariffs and trade policies can drive prices up. For context, the Japan-exclusive PlayStation 5 is roughly equivalent to $350, while the Digital PlayStation 5 retails for $599 in the U.S. The price has only increased since its initial launch. The Midnight Black version mirrors the Japan-exclusive PlayStation 5 from last year, just with a fresh color scheme.
Gamers who snag the Midnight Black PlayStation 5 will receive the console along with a matching DualSense controller. If you want to play disc-based games, you’ll need to purchase a separate disc drive, which Sony will also offer in Midnight Black for ¥11,980.
While this specific edition may not be available outside Japan, you can achieve a similar look for your PlayStation 5 at a cost. Sony sells Midnight Black console covers for existing models at $54. While it may feel a bit disappointing to spend more on top of your console purchase, can you really put a price on style?
