Digital Game Store That Guaranteed Lifelong Access Is Closing Its Doors

Legacy Games serves as a hub for a variety of lesser-known titles that you might not have come across before. This online storefront and launcher offers enticing deals on bundles of indie and casual games, allowing players to snag them at budget-friendly prices. “Get up to 15 games in a single pack,” the homepage boasts. “Hidden object, match 3, puzzles, and more! Starting at $14.99. No subscription required.” With over a million customers served, the site proudly declares, “Amazing games. Incredible value. Yours to keep forever.” However, there’s a catch: “forever” comes with an asterisk indicating, “if you download them before February 28, 2027.”

That’s the date when the Legacy Games online storefront will permanently close. The announcement was made on the site’s FAQ page this week. Monthly game deals will wrap up on December 1, and disc download codes will cease to function after December 31. Everything else will go offline on February 28, 2027, marking the final opportunity for users to re-download any claimed games they may have uninstalled.

“Download and install your purchased games through the Legacy Games Launcher as soon as possible, and no later than February 28, 2027,” the FAQ advises. “Once installed, you can access them through the launcher anytime. We recommend installing everything you want to keep while you still can.” Additionally, all existing points, rewards, and membership benefits will expire at the end of the year. Legacy Games also had a partnership with Amazon’s Luna streaming service, which will continue to be supported, but only for titles claimed before the closure date.

Reactions from the community have been mixed. One user on the Prime Gaming subreddit expressed frustration, stating, “This is a terrible business practice, and we need more regulations to prevent this or some form of compensation for users.” Another added, “I hope GOG doesn’t end up like this.”

While it’s difficult to envision larger digital storefronts like GOG and Steam shutting down, the reality is that nothing lasts forever, especially in the digital realm, regardless of what marketing slogans suggest. In the case of DRM-free digital PC games, players can transfer them between storage devices without the hassle of launchers or redownloading. However, this situation highlights the discomfort many feel about their digital libraries, which are often perceived as enduring, unlike the physical world around them. Unfortunately, that’s not the case with Legacy Games.
