Shopify Expands Catalog Access for AI Agents

More AI agents will soon have the ability to browse and make purchases from Shopify listings, signaling a significant step forward in the company’s vision for agent-driven commerce.

Shopify recently announced that it will enable shoppers to configure their AI agents to buy products on their behalf, granting these agents access to over a billion listings in Shopify’s extensive catalog, which includes items from both Shopify storefronts and other sources. Last month, Shopify revealed a partnership with Meta to allow its Muse agent to facilitate purchases for users; now, shoppers can utilize any agent without needing a specific integration.

To activate this feature, customers link an agent to their account on Shop, a platform owned by Shopify that streamlines order management, package tracking, and product recommendations. Similar to the Muse collaboration, customers can use the one-click Shop Pay option to complete transactions directly within their conversation with the agent. Orders made through the agent are directed back to the Shop app. Shopify is promoting this feature as a “personal shopper,” allowing users to set parameters such as budget limits or preferences for products with quick shipping. Each purchase must receive user approval.

E-commerce has emerged as a key arena in the AI landscape, with many demonstrations of agent tools culminating in transactions, whether it’s buying clothes, booking flights, or ordering food. Major players in the tech industry, including giants like Google and Amazon, are heavily investing in AI-powered shopping solutions aimed at creating agents that can handle purchases for users. This development is also part of an ongoing competition between Amazon and AI firms like Perplexity, as well as Meta’s Muse, regarding the capabilities of agents to shop on behalf of customers.
