Federal authorities investigate Tesla robotaxis for speeding in school zones.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is currently looking into claims that Tesla’s fleet of around 1,000 robotaxis, equipped with their automated driving system, are surpassing speed limits in active school zones. Waymo’s robotaxis have also come under scrutiny for similar issues, including illegally overtaking school buses and an incident involving a child near a California elementary school.
NHTSA:
> The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) received a DP on September 23, 2026, requesting an investigation into model year (MY) 2026 Tesla Robotaxis (Model Y and Cybercab) with the Automated Driving System (ADS) engaged. The Petitioner alleges that the ADS exceeds posted speed limits in active school zones.
The Cybercab, which debuted earlier this year, is already facing an investigation due to its absence of side mirrors, pedals, and a steering wheel. Additionally, NHTSA has initiated an inquiry into Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system for various traffic violations, including running red lights and driving against traffic.
