Rockstar Unveils 7 Key Details About GTA 6
As we approach November 19, the long wait for news from Rockstar Games about Grand Theft Auto 6 is finally yielding some exciting updates. On October 15, a detailed report surfaced, shedding light on the game’s development. While it doesn’t dive into the storyline or online features, it does clarify several persistent rumors regarding GTA 6’s budget, tone, and scale. Here’s what we discovered.
Rockstar hasn’t disclosed a specific budget for GTA 6, but the head of publishing, Jennifer Kolbe, dismissed the rumor that it exceeded the $1.5 billion spent on the Burj Khalifa. Nonetheless, the report suggests that GTA 6 is still the most expensive game ever made, given the extensive team involved and the lengthy development timeline.
Despite GTA 5 launching back in 2013 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Rockstar didn’t immediately pivot to the sequel. The original plan was to develop GTA 6 alongside Red Dead Redemption 2, but as the latter’s scope expanded, it required more resources. Development lead Rob Nelson noted that he had to redirect much of Rockstar’s workforce, including senior leadership, to complete Red Dead 2, which delayed GTA 6 by several years.
GTA 6 only became the studio’s main focus after Red Dead 2 was released. During its eight-year development, the game faced two delays and went through a challenging phase that Nelson described as “a dark period,” where the project’s vision was uncertain.
In 2018, Rockstar faced backlash for its demanding work culture, which required developers to put in late nights and weekends to finish Red Dead 2. This scrutiny, partly fueled by earlier reports on the studio’s labor practices, seems to have prompted a shift in approach. Back then, Rockstar had 2,441 employees across 12 offices; now, the workforce has grown to around 4,711, making it significantly larger than its competitors.
The report highlights that while Red Dead Redemption 2 offered a more nuanced narrative with a focus on realism, sometimes at the cost of fun, GTA 6 aims to strike a balance. It draws inspiration from Red Dead 2, featuring a story where players can still engage in wild antics while also connecting with the Bonnie-and-Clyde-like protagonists.
Despite the buzz around in-game themes like drug use and character nudity, players can anticipate a narrative that rivals prestige television.
Confirming a long-standing rumor, the report reveals that GTA 6 was initially codenamed Project Americas, intended to showcase vast areas of both North and South America. However, the scope later narrowed to focus on Miami and its surroundings.
The game centers on the dynamic relationship between the characters Jason and Lucia, necessitating the development of sophisticated AI systems to reflect their evolving partnership based on player choices. This ambitious design took years to refine.
“There’s trepidation about taking that on,” Nelson remarked. “Then you have certain people advocating for it: ‘We need this. This is a game about a couple. They have to be a couple.’ And so we had to commit to that.”
After the game’s first official reveal in 2023, Rockstar leadership recognized that creating unique NPC behaviors would require more time and resources than anticipated. “The projections they were giving us were horrifying,” Nelson stated.
“I think when it became apparent that some areas weren’t going to make it, that’s when we decided to make the shift of date,” added Phil Hooker, head of development. “We could hit that schedule, but it won’t be the game we want to make.”
With November 19 just around the corner, anticipation is building.
