Early Reactions Celebrate Clayface as a ‘Sensational’ Addition to the DC Universe

Since its announcement, DC’s Clayface has faced skepticism. This horror film centered on one of Batman’s foes, without the Dark Knight himself, evokes memories of Sony’s mixed bag of villain-centric Spider-Man flicks, which range from campy to downright unwatchable. However, with its theatrical release set for October 23, early reactions from influencers and critics are starting to clarify its potential.

Surprisingly, Clayface appears to be a major success. The feedback is not just positive; it’s overwhelmingly enthusiastic. Directed by James Watkins and penned by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, the film seems to be a standout addition to James Gunn’s DC Universe and a solid horror experience on its own. YouTuber Brandon Davis called it “freakishly awesome,” particularly praising lead actor Tom Rhys Harries. Similarly, Peter Gray highlighted Harries’ performance, noting he “brings equal boyish charm and quiet menace to the role.”

Concerns about Batman’s absence detracting from the film seem unfounded. Critic Edward Douglas remarked that the movie “does a good job of separating itself as a horror movie that doesn’t require knowing anything beforehand.” While some fans may miss the interconnectedness of the DC Universe, this approach seems to have worked in Clayface’s favor.

The film reportedly features some truly grotesque scenes, with Chris Killian noting it will “make you squirm,” while also serving as a heartfelt nod to classic gothic romance films. Currently, there are no negative reviews to be found; the consensus is overwhelmingly positive.

Despite the acclaim for Clayface, questions linger about Batman’s role in the broader DC landscape. The absence of the Caped Crusader has sparked much discussion since Gunn took the reins at DC Studios. While Robert Pattinson is set to return as Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part 2, that film isn’t considered part of the main DCU, and production is currently on hold.

Gunn does plan to introduce his version of Batman in The Brave and the Bold, which is still in early development. However, that means fans may have to wait years for the next Batman appearance. It’s possible the character could show up in another project first, but details remain unclear. Fans are hopeful that when Batman finally joins the DCU, he will face off against Clayface.

Clayface hits theaters on October 23.
