Mister Miracle series casts its lead roles, confirms DC head.

With James Gunn bringing Tom King on board as a key player in shaping the new DC Universe, it’s no surprise that several of King’s comic storylines are making their way to the screen. We’ve already seen his acclaimed 2021 miniseries, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, adapted into a 2026 film that didn’t quite hit the mark. Next up is an animated series based on King’s 2017-2019 run of Mister Miracle. While details have been scarce since the announcement last year, we now have some exciting casting news for the show’s heroes.

In a recent interview, DC Studios co-head Peter Safran revealed the two lead actors for the series. Josh Hutcherson, known for his role in The Hunger Games and a plethora of internet memes, will portray the titular escape artist, Mister Miracle, while Mackenzie Davis, recognized from Station Eleven and Happiest Season, will take on the role of his wife, Big Barda. King, who co-created Lanterns, has penned all eight episodes of Mister Miracle himself, and Safran praised the script as “dynamite.” He expressed enthusiasm, stating, “It’s a beautiful book and the adaptation is fantastic, so we’re excited about that.”

No prison can hold him. No trap can contain him. He is Scott Free, the global sensation known as Mister Miracle, the greatest escape artist to ever live. But can he pull off the ultimate trick – escaping death itself? Something has gone terribly wrong in the seemingly perfect life that Scott and his warrior wife, Big Barda, have built on Earth. With war erupting between their home worlds of Apocalypse and New Genesis, Scott’s ruthless adoptive father, Darkseid, appears to have finally seized the Anti-Life Equation – the ultimate weapon that would grant him total control over the universe. As the body count rises on both sides, only Mister Miracle can halt the carnage and restore peace. However, the devastating power of the Anti-Life Equation may already be influencing his mind, distorting his reality, unearthing buried pain, and threatening the fragile happiness he shares with the woman he loves. Thus begins the odyssey of Scott Free, Mister Miracle: a harrowing, hilarious, and heart-wrenching journey through the challenges of both the ordinary and extraordinary as the son of a god raised by the devil strives to save his family, his world, and perhaps even himself.

Safran also provided a hopeful update regarding the status of Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part 2, which faced an unexpected production halt earlier this month. Reeves has temporarily stepped back from the project due to a “family matter,” leaving fans concerned about the film’s future. When asked if there’s a chance filming might not resume, Safran firmly dismissed the notion, stating, “No.” This aligns with what star Robert Pattinson recently conveyed on the red carpet for his new film, Primetime, assuring fans that “we’re going to figure it all out.”

Additionally, Safran shared that early development on the Absolute Batman animated series is in progress, with Scott Snyder currently working on scripts. Meanwhile, James Gunn, co-head of DC, has yet to decide on his next directorial project, although he has mentioned that he has already begun writing something new.

The final villain may already be hiding in plain sight.
