Google Enhances AI Responses with More Visible Inline Links

Google is revamping its AI search results to boost the visibility of inline links, making them appear more frequently and higher up in responses. The shift from traditional link lists to a more customized view in AI Overviews and AI Mode has raised concerns about potential traffic drops for publishers. However, Google asserts that it has been steadily increasing the presence of inline links in its AI features, aiming to make key sources easily accessible when users need them.

In addition to this, Google is rolling out several enhancements to better showcase links and publishers within its AI results. For specific queries, such as those related to airline refunds, the company is testing a format that places relevant links at the top of the response, complete with contextual information. For articles deemed “timely,” Google is expanding the link carousels introduced earlier to more regions and languages. Links at the end of queries are also being redesigned to be more engaging and prominent, featuring image thumbnails and a more clickable layout. Furthermore, Google is experimenting with clickable links in AI mode that direct users to search profiles for publishers and creators.

Additionally, over 400 publishers are now part of Google’s “News AI” pilot program, which was announced in December. This licensing initiative compensates publishers for delivering enhanced content to support the development of new AI features, including detailed article overviews on Google News publisher pages. Notable partners like Axios, CNN, and the Financial Times have recently joined the program.
