Mercedes-AMG Unveils Its First All-Electric SUV with 1,150 Horsepower

Earlier this year, Mercedes’ AMG performance division caught our eye with the GT four-door coupe, a high-octane sports sedan boasting three axial flux motors that churn out over 1,150 horsepower. Now, let’s introduce its more robust sibling, the 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV, an equally powerful and ultra-fast-charging electric vehicle designed for families on the go.

This AMG GT SUV marks a significant milestone as it’s the first full-size SUV developed entirely in-house by the performance brand in its 59-year history. Set to arrive in the US next summer, this new electric vehicle is built on Mercedes’ cutting-edge AMG.EA architecture, merging the agility of a sports car with the practicality of a full-size SUV.

The SUV will come in three trims: GT 53, GT 55, and the flagship GT 63. The top-tier model will deliver a staggering 1,153 horsepower, powered by the same trio of axial flux motors found in the four-door coupe. This performance outshines the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric with Launch Control, promising some interesting encounters around Stuttgart.

Thanks to its 800-volt architecture, the AMG GT SUV supports rapid charging speeds of up to 710kW with the 128kWh battery (GT 63 / GT 55) and 600kW with the 106kWh battery (GT 53). Drivers can charge from 10% to 80% in just 12 minutes or gain approximately 450km (around 280 miles) of WLTP range in a mere 10 minutes. The 128kWh battery variants are expected to achieve a maximum range of 435 miles.

Speaking of that battery, it incorporates F1-inspired technology featuring specialized NCMA cathodes, silicon-based anodes, and cylindrical cells. An electrically nonconductive oil circulates around each cell for optimal thermal management, ensuring consistent high-power delivery and longevity. Mercedes has been at the forefront of battery technology for some time, and the AMG GT SUV is the latest testament to that innovation. The impressive 710kW charging speed could give Mercedes a competitive edge over Porsche’s 320kW capabilities.

For a full-size SUV, the AMG GT promises to handle like a vehicle half its size. Mercedes-AMG has replaced traditional mechanical roll bars with a newly engineered suspension system that employs active hydraulic elements to minimize pitch and roll during acceleration, heavy braking, and cornering. Coupled with three-stage air springs and standard six-degree active rear-axle steering, it aims to deliver a blend of track precision and long-distance comfort.

Despite its robust build, the AMG GT 63 SUV weighs in at 5,941 pounds, making it slightly lighter than the Lotus Eletre R (6,007 lbs) and Lucid Gravity (6,100 lbs), and nearly on par with the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric (5,960 lbs).

In a nod to performance enthusiasts, the AMG GT SUV features recorded sounds from real AMG engines, including the iconic AMG V8 and six-cylinder engines, to maintain that emotional connection to the brand. Mercedes takes pride in using authentic engine sounds rather than synthetic tones, although opinions may vary. The system even mimics mechanical gear shifts with paddle controls, offers customizable sound profiles, and integrates physical seat vibrations, allowing drivers to feel the thrill of a real engine instead of just a spacious frunk. The AMGFORCE Sport+ drive program comes standard across all trims of the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV.

Inside, the vehicle boasts the MB.OS platform displayed on a 14-inch screen, equipped with AI agents from various tech giants ready to assist with navigation, location discovery, web searches, and more. Mercedes’ onboard AI system manages physical functions like HVAC adjustments, drive mode changes, and lighting, all through voice commands.

Beyond navigation and voice control, the AMG GT SUV employs AI for high-performance track driving through the Predictive Performance Manager. This system utilizes track-mapping data to dynamically adjust electric motor output based on the terrain, conserving battery energy on downhill or winding sections while ensuring full power is available for steep climbs and long straights. This could lead to faster, more consistent lap times by preventing battery overheating and power throttling during track sessions—something any AMG enthusiast would surely appreciate.

While official pricing hasn’t been announced yet, we can expect more details as the launch date approaches.
