Avengers Actor Refutes Claims of Leaking Major Doomsday Spoiler
Since the announcement of Robert Downey Jr. taking on the role of Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel fans have been buzzing about how this will fit into the multiverse narrative. Could Victor von Doom be a variant of Tony Stark, the character Downey portrayed for over a decade? Would he keep his mask on, sparing Avengers like Steve Rogers and Thor from confronting the fact that their new foe bears a striking resemblance to their old ally?
David Harbour seemed to drop a hint about this during the summer, but now the Thunderbolts star is backtracking and claiming he never revealed anything.
[Warning: Potential spoilers (Who knows?) for Avengers: Doomsday (may) follow.]
In an August interview, Harbour was asked about his various projects and, when prompted for a line from Doomsday, he reportedly said, “You… are Tony Stark,” while gesturing. If that’s accurate, it suggests that Downey’s Doom might indeed reveal his identity in Doomsday, making his face recognizable to the MCU heroes. However, Harbour is now denying he ever made that statement.
During a chat with ScreenRant at New York Comic Con, Harbour played it cool when questioned about his supposed quote. “Did I say that I said that?” he responded. “I think you guys make this stuff up.”
He went on to clarify that the line he actually provided was the Red Guardian counting down from five, followed by a tease that “something very important happens” once he finishes counting. Interesting.
“I don’t know about the Tony Stark thing,” Harbour added. It’s possible that the “You… are Tony Stark” line was simply a misunderstanding. Alternatively, it could be that Marvel’s spoiler control team had a word with Harbour about keeping things under wraps. Who knows, maybe they’ll have Benedict Cumberbatch step in to manage Harbour during interviews, just like he did for Tom Holland.
We won’t have to wait too long to see how Avengers: Doomsday portrays Doctor Doom. The film, the first Avengers installment in seven years, will bring together beloved MCU characters like Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, new faces like the Fantastic Four, and familiar figures from the Fox movies, including Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18.
Or is Sam Wilson just not great at recruiting?
