Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Film Faces Unfortunate News

Taika Waititi’s latest film, *Klara and the Sun*, hits theaters this Friday, but its early reviews (25% on Rotten Tomatoes) suggest it might not enjoy a long run. Meanwhile, his long-anticipated *Star Wars* project seems to be stuck in limbo. Waititi recently shared that the film is “on ice.”

Originally announced in 2020, there has been little news about the *Star Wars* film since then, aside from a brief update in 2023 confirming it was still in the works. Now, however, that seems doubtful. “I hate to break this to you, but we’re going to actually put it on ice,” Waititi stated.

When asked if he could provide more details, he was told by his publicist, “If you have to ask, the answer is no.”

“Well, there’s your answer. I don’t even know how to dress it up or make it even vague,” he added. He described the film as “very iced” and mentioned he has at least four other projects he’s trying to get off the ground.

While “on ice” doesn’t necessarily mean the project is canceled, it doesn’t sound like Waititi will be exploring a galaxy far, far away anytime soon. He did offer a glimmer of hope: “Ice ages do come to an end. Who knows?”

Waititi’s struggle to get his *Star Wars* film moving isn’t an isolated case. *Game of Thrones* creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss were set to develop a trilogy but walked away after signing a deal with Netflix. Rian Johnson, who directed *The Last Jedi*, was also confirmed for a trilogy that never came to fruition, as he shifted his focus to the *Knives Out* series. Other abandoned *Star Wars* projects include a film that Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige was working on, a canceled Ben Solo film featuring Adam Driver and Steven Soderbergh, and a pitch from David Fincher that never progressed.

On a brighter note, *Star Wars: Starfighter*, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, is set to bring *Star Wars* back to theaters on May 28, 2027. Disney has several other *Star Wars* films in the pipeline, but only time will tell if they make it to the big screen or end up on ice like Waititi’s project.

The future of a galaxy far, far away remains uncertain.
