Director of Lord of the Rings Confirms Tintin Sequel is in the Works

Tintin enthusiasts have been waiting for a long time. After the release of The Adventures of Tintin, directed by Steven Spielberg, in 2011, both Spielberg and producer Peter Jackson hinted at a sequel. Initially, this follow-up was expected to arrive around 2014 or 2015, with Jackson at the helm. However, that timeline has come and gone without any updates.

Fortunately, Jackson recently provided some encouraging news about the long-anticipated Tintin sequel. At the Sitges Film Festival in Spain, which celebrates fantasy, horror, and cult films, he confirmed that the project is still alive. “We’ve also already written the script for Tintin 2, the second Tintin film. That will be the next film I make,” he stated. This aligns with his comments from May, where he broke years of silence to confirm that a draft of the script was complete and that he would be directing.

For those who might not know, The Adventures of Tintin is a classic comic series created by Belgian cartoonist Hergé, running from 1929 to 1976. It follows Tintin, a Belgian reporter, and his dog Snowy as they embark on various adventures. In the 2011 film, Tintin sets out to uncover the treasure of a legendary naval warship, the Unicorn.

In addition to Tintin, Jackson shared updates on the future of The Lord of the Rings films. He revealed that The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is nearing the end of filming, with just two weeks of shooting remaining. He also confirmed that The Shadow of the Past is still in development and in the scriptwriting phase.

The Hunt for Gollum will focus on Aragorn’s mission to locate Gollum for Gandalf, set before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. Directed by Andy Serkis, who reprises his role as Gollum, the film is slated for release on December 17, 2027.

As for The Shadow of the Past, it will take place 14 years after Frodo departs Middle-earth for Valinor, following Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they retrace their legendary journey. The script is being developed by Stephen Colbert and Philippa Boyens. Despite earlier concerns about the film’s future following the merger between Paramount and Warner Bros., Jackson has dismissed those worries.

The director is now ready to take the reins from Spielberg.
