James Gunn dispels Supergirl casting rumors involving Milly Alcock.
Since the launch of the new DC cinematic universe under James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, fans have been closely watching as he reshapes Warner Bros.’ lineup of superhero films and TV series. While projects like Superman and Lanterns have garnered positive attention, this summer’s Supergirl was a significant misstep for the emerging DCU, sparking unfounded rumors about another overhaul and growing discontent among fans. Despite this, Gunn and Peter Safran have regained some trust in guiding the DCU under Warner Bros. Discovery’s new leadership, though frustrated fans remain on the lookout for any signs of trouble.
Recently, a story emerged when Supergirl star Milly Alcock removed all references to the DC Studios film from her Instagram account. This seemingly harmless action led to speculation that Alcock had been fired, recast, or had left the DCU, despite a lack of supporting evidence. As is often the case, Gunn took to social media to address the swirling rumors directly.
On Threads, Gunn dismissed the claim that Alcock had been dropped from her role as Supergirl, labeling it “BS” and asserting that the rumors surrounding various in-development DCU projects “couldn’t be more false.”
Gunn was actually countering three separate rumors, including one about Matt Reeves no longer directing The Batman Part 2—he is still on board, although Steven Soderbergh is assisting him with filming—and another suggesting that the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, had undergone a test screening that received poor reviews. The speculation regarding Alcock and Supergirl was just another piece of misinformation that Gunn felt compelled to clarify.
In response, Gunn stated, “Oh brother. You guys just have to stop listening to BS, and I’m mostly done shooting down rumors as there are so many, and I’m not on here much. But all three of these couldn’t be more false. I’m showing PETER SAFRAN my first Director’s Cut today — he’s the first person to see it obviously — and that’s a month early!”
As is typical with comic book movie rumors, there’s often more smoke than fire. A more plausible explanation for Alcock’s decision to clean up her Instagram profile of Supergirl references is that she’s finished promoting the film and wants to avoid the negativity that can come from online comments.
Regardless, Alcock is set to reprise her role as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl next year in DC Studios’ Man of Tomorrow. She will be joined by David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult, who will return as Clark Kent/Superman and Lex Luthor, respectively. The film also features Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., María Gabriela de Faría as the Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Aaron Pierre as John Stewart/Green Lantern, and Adria Arjona, reportedly as Maxima (though some rumors suggest she may be Wonder Woman). Andre Royo, Matthew Lillard, and Sinqua Walls have also been cast in undisclosed roles.
Supergirl is currently streaming on HBO Max, while Man of Tomorrow is set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027.
