Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake Sets Record as the Largest Game in the Series

When the original Nintendo 64 version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time launched in 1998, it was contained within a 32 MB cartridge. Fast forward to the upcoming remake for the Nintendo Switch 2, and you’ll find that this updated classic is over 800 times larger. The newly revealed file size indicates that the remake will require 27 GB of storage, so it might be time to free up some space on your console.

This information comes from a photo of the game’s download card in Japan, shared on social media. While 27 GB isn’t massive by today’s standards—especially when you consider that titles like Call of Duty can exceed 200 GB—it does make this the largest mainline Zelda game to date.

For comparison, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the latest mainline entry, occupies 24 GB on the Switch 2. The only title that surpasses the Ocarina of Time remake is Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, the 2025 Musou spinoff, which takes up just over 43 GB. Given the remake’s intricate (and somewhat debated) art style and its expanded game world, the larger file size is understandable, though it’s still surprising that it surpasses Tears of the Kingdom.

Players are just around the corner from experiencing the Ocarina of Time remake, set to launch exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5. Nintendo is one of the few companies willing to release a title close to Grand Theft Auto 6. Alongside enhanced graphics, the game introduces several new features, including the ability to jump at will.

Earlier this month, an outlet had the chance to try out the game and was impressed by how timeless the new version feels. The feedback highlighted that Nintendo has successfully modernized the experience while maintaining the nostalgic essence of Link’s first 3D adventure.
