Star Wars Hosts Its Own Super Bowl with a Returning Original Cast Member

If you’ve ever watched an NFL game and thought, “This would be epic with lightsabers and Stormtroopers,” then you’re in for a treat. Disney has just announced a Star Wars-themed animated telecast of Super Bowl LXI set for February.

Titled “Star Wars Funday Football,” this unique broadcast will turn real-life players into animated characters, bringing the on-field action to life in real time using advanced data visualization technology from Sony’s Beyond Sports. This tech utilizes player tracking data and optical tracking to create an immersive experience. Expect to see iconic Star Wars characters stepping in during pivotal moments—imagine Luke Skywalker throwing a touchdown or Chewbacca making a game-changing interception. With his size and agility, Chewie would definitely be a formidable defensive back.

Anthony Daniels will lend his voice to C-3PO for this special event. Just picture the chaos of a commentary booth featuring R2-D2 on play-by-play and C-3PO providing analysis. If Monday Night Football’s color commentator is moving on after this season, perhaps Threepio could snag that full-time role.

The Star Wars alternate telecast will be available on Disney Plus, Disney Channel, and Disney XD. Super Bowl LXI is scheduled for February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, marking the first time ESPN will air a Super Bowl.

While Star Wars celebrates its 50th anniversary next year, this themed Super Bowl won’t be the biggest event for fans in 2027. The original Star Wars film—where Han definitely shot first—will return to theaters on February 19, 2027, in stunning 70 mm IMAX. Additionally, the highly anticipated Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, will hit theaters on May 28, 2027.

In the meantime, Star Wars enthusiasts can dive into some exciting new video games. Star Wars Zero Company focuses on a diverse group of operators navigating the Clone Wars, while Star Wars: Galactic Racer offers thrilling and perilous racing across the Outer Rim.
