DC Introduces a New Green Lantern Inspired by Warhammer 40K Aesthetics
HBO’s Lanterns may have wrapped up without a second season in sight, but Green Lantern enthusiasts have something exciting on the horizon. DC Comics has unveiled Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos, a miniseries that offers a fresh spin on the iconic Green Lantern Corps.
Crafted by writer Dan Watters and artist Kyle Hotz, Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos presents an Elseworlds narrative where the Green Lanterns resemble the formidable Space Marines from Warhammer 40,000. These are tough warriors armed with heavy weaponry, engaged in an epic cosmic conflict.
In Doomed Cosmos, the Empire of Humanity is on a relentless campaign to conquer the universe, and the heavily armed Green Lanterns are the last line of defense. Hal Jordan stands as the sole human fighting against this Empire after being betrayed by Oliver Queen, known in the main DC Comics universe as Green Arrow. In this alternate reality, it seems Jordan and Queen never formed their iconic bond during a cross-country road trip in the 1970s.
“Visually, I am trying to walk the line between over-the-top space opera and the emotional beats of the story,” Hotz shared in a statement. “I want to convey that the Lanterns are worn out, battered, and definitely the underdogs. Their armor is damaged, and their weapons are held together with tape and wire. These are soldiers nearing the end of their fight.”
Here’s the official synopsis from DC Comics:
For centuries, the Empire of Humanity has swept across the universe, laying siege to the cosmos planet by planet until all kneel before the might of the human race. Only the heavily militarized Green Lantern Corps dares oppose the human crusade.
And no human has ever fought for the Corps against the Empire. Until Hal Jordan.
Once a soldier fighting for humanity, Hal was betrayed by his battle-brother Oliver Queen and left for dead on an alien world. Rescued and deprogrammed by the Green Lantern Corps, Hal is now the Corps’ only human warrior and a powerful strategic weapon in its war against humankind. Hal’s blood-soaked odyssey will take him through the burning ruins of a DC Universe unlike any readers have seen before, as he fights for peace by taking the battle to the shores of Hell itself.
Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos is an Elseworlds tale, meaning it exists in its own continuity, similar to DC’s Black Label titles. Creators have the freedom to shake up the status quo, whether that means transforming Green Lanterns into Space Marines, adding a high fantasy twist, or reimagining Superman’s father as the hero.
The first issue of this six-issue miniseries is set to launch on January 20, 2027. Watters and Hotz will be joined by colorist Dan Brown (not that Dan Brown) and letterer Steve Wands. The inaugural 32-page issue of Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos will retail for $4.99 and will feature variant covers from Björn Barends, Steve Beach, and Ashley Wood. A foil variant by Barends will be priced at $7.99.
