Mike Flanagan describes adapting Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40K series as a ‘challenging endeavor.’

Mike Flanagan has made a name for himself by adapting some of horror’s most iconic tales, from Stephen King’s *Doctor Sleep* to the chilling *The Haunting of Hill House*. His latest venture, an adaptation of *Carrie*, has received glowing reviews and is currently a hit on Prime Video. However, his next project might be his most ambitious yet: translating the vast science-fiction universe of *Warhammer 40,000* into live action.

In a recent discussion on *The Process Unlocked* podcast, Flanagan shared insights about the Amazon project, which he is developing with star and executive producer Henry Cavill. He likened the experience to “climbing my adaptation Everest.”

The challenge lies in where to start with a franchise that boasts decades of lore, hundreds of novels, and a timeline stretching over thousands of years. Flanagan noted the franchise’s extensive cast and intricate history as significant hurdles.

“These are novel lengths. These are not small. But there are so many characters. It takes place over so many thousands of years. There’s so much there,” he explained. “The challenge is how do you get in? That’s really a brutally difficult adaptation, but it’s been so fun for it.”

Cavill, a longtime enthusiast of the tabletop franchise, is attached to star and executive produce the live-action adaptation. Games Workshop confirmed in a July financial report that initial outlines have been completed, and Flanagan is expected to begin writing scripts. However, the company has warned that bringing these adaptations to life will take years, and no release date or specific storylines for the series have been revealed.

Flanagan is no stranger to adapting complex fictional worlds. He is also working on a television adaptation of King’s *The Dark Tower*, a fantasy saga that spans multiple novels and connects to a broader universe. He noted that King’s method of introducing readers to that world provides a clearer starting point.

He referenced the opening of *The Gunslinger*, the first *Dark Tower* novel, which starts with a straightforward premise: a gunslinger chasing a man in black across a desert. King gradually expands the mythology from there.

“Seventy percent of my job is done for me by Steve,” Flanagan remarked about adapting King. “Warhammer is not like that.”

The *Warhammer 40,000* universe, crafted by Games Workshop, is set in a grim future where humanity battles alien civilizations, demonic entities, and relentless warfare. Its narratives span novels, tabletop games, video games, and more, presenting Flanagan with a vast array of material to sift through.

Flanagan’s horror background may align well with a universe known for its grotesque monsters, religious zealotry, and cosmic dread. In addition to *Warhammer 40,000*, he has upcoming projects like DC Studios’ *Clayface* and a new *Exorcist* film, while his *Dark Tower* adaptation continues to develop.

For now, the pressing question is how Flanagan will condense the immense mythology of *Warhammer 40,000* into a narrative that resonates with both longtime fans and newcomers. As he has indicated, pinpointing that entry point is one of the most challenging aspects of the task.
