Critical Role Embarks on an Epic Adventure in Middle-earth with New Lord of the Rings Collaboration
As much as we enjoy the epic, multi-episode campaigns from Critical Role, the cast has also treated us to a variety of one-shots in Dungeons & Dragons and Daggerheart. While some of these have sparked debate (who could forget the Wendy collaboration?), many sponsored one-shots have been a blast to watch, like Control: Resonant and even Suikoden.
These shorter sessions not only require less time commitment but also allow the Critical Role cast to explore different gameplay styles by adapting the setting to D&D mechanics, which typically align well with high fantasy themes.
Fans can look forward to an exciting new one-shot that blends familiar lore with gameplay, as Critical Role is set to collaborate with the iconic world of Middle-Earth from The Lord of the Rings.
Attendees at TwitchCon San Diego this November are in for a special experience: a new Critical Role x The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power one-shot.
Scheduled for November 15 at 11 AM in the Glitch Theater, The Rings of Power: A Middle-Earth One-Shot will feature the cast from Critical Role alongside the cast of Prime Video’s The Rings of Power in a fresh tabletop adventure. Liam O’Brien, co-founder of Critical Role and known for his role as Vax in the animated series The Legend of Vox Machina, will be leading this one-shot.
It remains unclear whether this session will utilize the D&D system or Critical Role’s own TTRPG, Daggerheart. Previous collaborations, like the Overwatch one-shot, have opted for Daggerheart, while others have stuck with D&D. There’s also a possibility that the one-shot could incorporate the rules from The One Ring, the popular TTRPG set in Tolkien’s Middle-earth.
Details about which members from The Rings of Power and Critical Role will participate in this one-shot are still under wraps. According to TwitchCon’s official site, more information will be revealed soon.
This isn’t the first time Critical Role has ventured into Middle-earth for an actual-play one-shot; they previously collaborated with Warner Bros. for the 2017 game, Shadow of War. Whether the cast will embody trolls and orcs this time around is yet to be determined.
