The Sims’ Future Takes a Chaotic Turn

Today, EA revealed significant changes, including the layoffs of 400 employees and the closure of BioWare. Fans of The Sims quickly voiced their concerns about the future of their cherished life-simulation franchise, which has been surrounded by uncertainty due to ongoing downgrades and speculation that The Sims 5 may never materialize. In an internal email shared with an outlet, EA executives Cam Weber and David Tinson announced that development on a game codenamed Project Lotus would be put on hold.

“In Lifestyle, we’re focusing on the long-term potential of The Sims and skate. We’re prioritizing our efforts on ‘Project Evergreen’ for The Sims to give the team more time to realize the full potential and vision for the game, and to facilitate this, we’re pausing development on ‘Project Lotus.’”

Reactions from fans were mixed; some celebrated the halt of the controversial project, while others expressed concern about the series’ future under EA’s management. One fan remarked, “sims 4 not making it out 2026 THE END IS NIGH.”

Project Lotus was rumored to be an alternate name for Project Rene, which was initially presented as a successor to The Sims 4 and seemed poised to become The Sims 5, despite EA’s reluctance to label it as such. Early glimpses of the project showcased an extensive customization system and multiplayer features. However, it appeared to be downgraded to a mobile game around 2024, with screenshots surfacing that resembled previous mobile entries in The Sims franchise. Rene was also revealed to be free-to-play, with some sources suggesting it might function similarly to Roblox. Later playtests even included clear imitations of popular Roblox experiences like Dress to Impress.

Details about Project Evergreen, now the focus for developer Maxis, are still scarce. Reports suggest it could be the new title for Project X, a single-player game distinct from Rene that seems to align more closely with the mainline Sims experience. Some fans expressed excitement, hoping that Project Evergreen might ultimately evolve into The Sims 5 or at least surpass the issues associated with Rene.

Regardless, the future of The Sims feels uncertain following Wednesday’s announcements. Even if Evergreen turns out to be The Sims 5, the name feels unfortunate, especially given how long fans have been waiting since The Sims 4 launched in 2014 and transitioned to free-to-play years later. At least there are those free updates for Paralives to look forward to.
