Android Users in Canada Urged to Update as Permanent Daylight Saving Time Takes Effect
As the US moves closer to making daylight saving time a permanent fixture, thanks to the House’s advancement of the Sunshine Protection Act in July, there may be some unexpected effects from enjoying an extra hour of evening sunlight year-round. Following the lead of Canadian provinces like British Columbia and Manitoba, which have already switched to permanent daylight saving time, Google has provided some helpful tips for Android users who might encounter time display issues when the clocks don’t fall back an hour on November 1st.
In a recent announcement on the Android community help forums, Google offered a straightforward solution for Canadians facing time discrepancies due to the new time zone regulations. They recommend that if your device is showing the wrong time, you should first check for any pending updates from your phone’s manufacturer and Google, then restart your device.
If the problem persists and your device still shows the incorrect time or time zone, Google advises enabling location-based time zone detection. You can do this by searching for “Date and Time” in your Android settings and turning on both the “Automatic time zone” and “Use location for time zone” options. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, you can also try disabling “Automatic time zone” detection and manually selecting a time zone that corresponds to your region’s correct time offset.
While daylight saving time regulations can differ across Canadian provinces (and even within smaller areas), making it tricky for devices to keep up with changes, the situation may be simpler in the US if the entire country opts for permanent daylight saving time simultaneously.
