Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Feature Involved in Fatal I-80 Pedestrian Accident
A 71-year-old man tragically lost his life after being struck by a Tesla in Full Self-Driving (FSD) mode while crossing I-80 in Vallejo, CA, around 2:30 AM on Thursday. The California Highway Patrol reviewed dashcam footage from the Tesla, which indicated that the vehicle attempted to brake and steer left to avoid the pedestrian. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, the right front of the Tesla made contact with the individual.
Authorities suspect that at least one other vehicle may have hit the pedestrian after the Tesla, but aside from the Tesla driver, who remained at the scene, no other drivers stopped to assist. The CHP’s Solano Area office is urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant information to come forward.
In a separate incident last week on I-80, a driver reported that he was asleep while using FSD when his Tesla collided with a police car that was parked at the scene of another accident. Following that event, the CHP reminded drivers that “Despite its name, full self-driving is not fully autonomous. Technology does not relieve drivers of their responsibility to safely operate their vehicles.”
