Vinland Saga’s creator shares an emotional update on the upcoming third season of the anime.

Vinland Saga is hailed as one of the most outstanding manga series ever created. Makoto Yukimura masterfully explores the heavy themes of war and violence through a rich cast of characters in this historical drama. The series was adapted into an anime by Wit Studio in 2019, followed by a second season produced by MAPPA that aired in 2023. Since then, fans have been eagerly anticipating news about a potential continuation, but Yukimura recently shared a disappointing update.

In response to a fan inquiry on X regarding the third season of Vinland Saga, Yukimura stated, “Sorry my friend, I have no good news about that. The project is not currently in progress.” There have been no official announcements from the manga’s publisher or the anime studio about the future of the series.

Vinland Saga serves as a perfect introduction to anime for those unfamiliar with the medium, showcasing its potential through a gripping narrative set in 11th Century AD, spanning Iceland and England. The story follows Thorfinn, who witnesses his father’s murder at the hands of the ambitious Viking leader Askeladd. Despite his father’s pacifist teachings, Thorfinn joins Askeladd’s crew, biding his time for revenge. As he transforms into a ruthless raider, his relationship with Askeladd evolves into a complex mentorship. However, Thorfinn’s quest for vengeance falters when Askeladd is killed during a plot against the Danish king of England.

Faced with the futility of becoming a murderer, Thorfinn loses his sense of purpose and resigns to a life of servitude on a Danish farm owned by a kind master named Ketil. After forming a bond with another slave, Thorfinn confronts his past and, through painful introspection, resolves to embrace pacifism like his father. Yet, the harsh realities of the Viking world challenge his convictions when King Canute sets his sights on Ketil’s farm.

The second season concludes with Thorfinn finding his resolve and setting out to discover the legendary land of Vinland, where he and his friends can escape the horrors of war. Unfortunately, the timeline for the continuation of Thorfinn’s journey remains uncertain. Vinland Saga is produced by a committee, a common practice in the anime industry where multiple companies collaborate to create a series. This often results in delays and creative conflicts. While MAPPA has begun to shift towards in-house production, as seen with Chainsaw Man through a partnership with Netflix, Vinland Saga remains tied to its production committee, which includes several companies.

While manga and anime are celebrated for their emotional narratives, Vinland Saga distinguishes itself with its nuanced exploration of themes such as war, violence, regret, and grief. It’s a compelling historical drama that imparts profound lessons about humanity, making the absence of a third season all the more disappointing.
