The Legend of California’s Early Access Launch Delayed to 2027 by Co-Creator of Overwatch

Former Overwatch developers Jeff Kaplan and Tim Ford are hard at work on a survival game titled The Legend of California at their new studio, Kintsugiyama. Initially set for a Steam Early Access launch in 2026, the release has now been pushed back to 2027, as confirmed in a recent Reddit AMA.

The Legend of California is an ambitious survival experience inspired by games like Rust, where players can establish a ranch, gather resources, and explore a fictional version of California during the Gold Rush. The game emphasizes multiplayer gameplay with MMO-like features, and Kintsugiyama is taking extra time to enhance server performance to support this. Although the official account for The Legend of California mentioned the delay to 2027 in a reply on X months ago, it didn’t gain much attention until the recent Reddit AMA.

In one response, Kaplan noted that The Legend of California was intended to be in early access by now, but Alpha 3 faced performance issues that didn’t meet their release standards. He further explained that the team is focused on achieving specific server performance metrics before launch, while feeling confident about the game’s features and content.

Once Kintsugiyama addresses these technical challenges, an early access release should be on the horizon. During the Q&A, Kaplan and Ford also hinted at exciting features still in development, including private servers, modding support, a comprehensive collapse and support system for mines, and the addition of pets.

The Legend of California is set to enter early access on Steam and the Epic Games Store in 2027. Ford mentioned that the studio is in talks with Nvidia regarding a GeForce Now release, although the game won’t be available on consoles during the early access phase. Another alpha test is scheduled on Steam from November 12 to November 18.
