Nissan Launches Free Retro-Style Racing Game

Ahead of its home race at the Tokyo E-Prix on May 17–18, the Nissan Formula E Team has unveiled its first-ever video game: NISMO Electric Racer Tokyo. This arcade-style title marks Nissan’s entry into gaming and brings together electric racing, Tokyo street culture, and classic 90s nostalgia in a single fast-paced experience.

Retro Racing Meets Tokyo’s Streets

Designed to reflect the high-energy atmosphere of Tokyo’s electric avenues, the game delivers a retro 8-bit aesthetic inspired by classic Japanese arcade racers. Players take control of a Nissan Formula E car and speed through a pixel-stylized Tokyo backdrop featuring Mount Fuji, neon signs, and cherry blossom trees.

The visual style taps into Japan’s deep gaming history while delivering something playful and accessible, capturing both the spirit of Formula E and Tokyo’s unique vibe.

Illustrator Kentaro Yoshida Joins the Project

The game is developed in collaboration with Japanese-Australian illustrator Kentaro Yoshida, whose signature blend of pastel colors and bold lines shapes the game’s look. This marks his debut in game design, and his influence doesn’t stop at the visuals.

Yoshida has also designed a special-edition race car livery that will appear during the Tokyo E-Prix. This updated version of Nissan’s Sakura-themed car will be revealed on May 14 at an event at Nissan’s Global Headquarters in Yokohama, and also showcased across NISMO’s official channels.

Challenge the Pros on the Leaderboard

Adding to the excitement, fans can compete for leaderboard dominance by posting their best lap times. Nissan Formula E drivers Oliver Rowland and Norman Nato are also expected to jump into the action, setting high scores for players to beat.

To complement the game’s release, Nissan has also dropped a 90s-inspired game trailer, blending gameplay with actual Formula E race footage to fully deliver that throwback arcade feel.
