James Gunn Proposed a Change to David Corenswet’s Superman, but the Actor Stood Firm: “I was like, ‘No!'”

David Corenswet, who plays Superman, shared an interesting tidbit about his performance that director James Gunn suggested he change, specifically regarding the iconic levitating kiss between Superman and Lois Lane.

During a conversation with Jonathan Bailey, known for his role in Wicked: For Good, Corenswet recalled the moment, saying, “I was like, ‘Oh, shit’ when I saw your kiss at the end [of Superman]. My favorite moment of chemistry is the chuckle.”

The film culminates in a dramatic showdown between Superman and Lex Luthor, leading to a heartfelt moment where Superman and Lois share a kiss while floating above Metropolis, right after Lois confesses her love for Clark. Interestingly, Bailey’s character Fiyero also experiences a levitating kiss in the Wicked sequel with Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo.

Corenswet revealed that Gunn had a specific note about his chuckle during the scene where Lois says, “I love you too.” “James came up to me and said, ‘It’s not working. It needs to be solemn,'” Corenswet explained. “I was like, ‘No! The whole point is, “I fucking know that you love me.”‘ Credit to James. He was right on 90% of everything, but on that one, he saw that chuckle was a very truthful thing.”

Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult will reprise their roles as Superman and Lex Luthor in Gunn’s upcoming film, Man of Tomorrow, which is said to take a different approach than a typical sequel.

Wicked: For Good is currently in theaters, while Superman is available for streaming.
